Introduction to the Danube River 2025 Handcycling Adventure

Hey there, fellow cyclists and adventurers!

I’m beyond excited to kick off this new series of blog posts, where I’ll be sharing all the ins and outs of my upcoming 2025 Danube River handcycling adventure. If you’ve been following my journey, you know that I’m all about combining travel, adventure, and a bit of long-term work avoidance. This trip is no exception—it will be the culmination of months (and let’s be real, probably years) of dreaming, planning, and gearing up for what promises to be an epic journey along one of Europe’s most storied rivers.

The Inspiration Behind the Journey

Let me take you back to the moment this adventure was born. Picture it: I’m sitting quietly after a long day of handcycling through the Australian wheatbelt near my home in Western Australia. The sun has set and the stars are out, the air is crisp, and as I sip my mineral water, I start thinking about what’s next... After handcyling down the Rhine River in 2017, recovering from a major shoulder operation in 2019 and those Covid years, the idea of cycling the Danube River as a real possibility popped into my head, and once it was there, it wouldn’t let go. The Danube, with its winding paths through historic cities, picturesque villages, and breathtaking landscapes, seemed like the perfect next challenge. Plus, there’s something about the idea of following the flow of such a significant river that just feels right. So here we are… A year out from the journey and planning our adventure.

Why Handcycle the Danube?

You might be wondering, “Why the Danube? And why on a handcycle?” Well, if you know me, you know I’m not one to take the easy route (literally and figuratively). Handcycling offers a unique perspective on the world—one that’s closer to the ground, more connected to the landscape, and, in my opinion, way more rewarding than driving or taking a train… And of course, as a parplegic, handcyling is my only option for hitting the open roads and cycle paths of Europe. Also, the Danube offers a mix of challenges and beauty that’s hard to resist. From the flat, easy-going paths in Germany to the more rugged, hilly terrains in Hungary, it’s got a bit of everything.

Plus, let’s be honest—there’s something incredibly satisfying about the idea of rolling into Vienna, Budapest, and Belgrade under my own power (well, a touch of power assistance these days…I am 57 after all), with the river as my guide. It’s an adventure in the truest sense of the word. I honestly can’t wait which is why I am here in Germany in 2024 getting the equipment together ready for next year.

What’s in Store for You

Over the next few months, I’ll be diving deep into the gear, preparation, and planning that goes into a trip like this. From the Coho XC Cycle Trailer that’s going to be my trusty companion, and the other equipment necessary, to the tech gadgets keeping me connected on the road, I’ll be breaking down every detail. Each post will start with a personal story or experience to keep things relatable and fun—because, let’s face it, the best advice comes from those who’ve been there, done that, and learned a thing or two along the way.

I’ll also be sharing the specific challenges I’m facing as I adapt gear for handcycling, like creating a hybrid mount for the Coho trailer or setting up camp while in a wheelchair. My goal is to make this adventure as accessible and achievable as possible for anyone thinking about embarking on a similar journey—whether you’re a seasoned handcyclist, a weekend warrior, or someone who’s just curious about what it takes to tackle a river like the Danube on three wheels. You can even live vicariously through this adventure online.

Stay Tuned and Get Involved

I want this blog series to be as interactive as possible. If there’s specific gear you’re curious about or any aspect of the journey you’d like me to dive into, drop me a comment below or hit me up on my YouTube channel. I’m always up for a good conversation, and who knows—you might just inspire the next post!

So, buckle up (or, in this case, strap on your helmet) and join me as I prepare for this incredible adventure. There’s a lot to cover, and I can’t wait to take you along for the ride.

Catch you on the trail,

Andreas
